Even among people who do use AI search, only 17% stop after the AI answer; 22% click through to the cited links anyway, and among heavy daily AI users that click-through rate rises to 33%. In other words, AI is increasingly a verification layer, not the final destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The generational data reinforces this. Millennials lead AI assistant use at just 33% adoption, followed by Gen X at 22% and Baby Boomers and older at 20%. Growth is coming from existing users going deeper, 53% of frequent AI searchers expect to use it more next year \u2014 while only 4% of non-users expect to start. The data says they do not. As SEJ contributor Greg Jarboe put it, search engines &#8220;are winning the trust war by more than 40 points.&#8221; People treat AI like a helpful summary they still want to double-check, and when they check, they click. That behaviour is the whole game for SMEs: if your website is the page they land on to verify a claim, you win the visit, the trust, and often the customer. That means a well-structured, trustworthy website still does the heavy lifting. Visible author bylines, &#8220;last updated&#8221; dates, transparent methodology, real contact details, and structured data all tell both users and AI systems that you are a primary source worth citing.
