For most Vietnamese SMEs, whether you run a real estate agency, a boutique retail shop, an F&B brand or a wellness studio, the form is the single most important conversion point on the entire site.

The good news is that form conversion is largely a design problem, not a traffic problem. Nielsen Norman Group found that forms following usability guidelines achieved a 78% first-try submission rate, compared with just 42% for non-compliant forms. Below are eight field-tested principles you can apply to any contact, booking or checkout form starting today.

Table des matières

Toggle

Why form design decides your conversion rate

8 form UX principles that lift conversions

1. Baymard Institute research shows that 17% of shoppers abandoned a cart in the last quarter simply because the checkout form felt too long or too complicated.

The upside is just as measurable. Baymard reports an average 35% increase in e-commerce conversion when checkout flows are improved, and much of that gain comes from smarter form design. For an SME running paid ads, a better form means the same ad budget produces more leads, directly lifting your ROI without spending an extra dong.

8 form UX principles that lift conversions

You don’t need a full redesign to see results. Start with the changes that remove the most friction first, then work down the list.

1. Cut every field you don’t truly need

Every field you add is a fresh reason to quit. Ask whether each piece of information is essential right now, can be collected later, or can be derived automatically. NN/G documented a case where trimming a form from six fields to two directly lifted conversions. For a lead form, a name and a phone number (or email) are often enough—you can qualify everything else during the follow-up call.

2. Use a single-column layout

Multi-column forms force the eye to zig-zag and blur which fields belong together. Testing consistently shows single-column layouts are faster to complete and less error-prone, and Baymard notes that the 16% of sites still using multiple columns cause real confusion. Keep everything in one vertical flow; the only sensible exception is tightly related fields like city and postal code sharing a row.

3. Keep labels visible, don’t rely on placeholder text

Placeholder text that vanishes the moment a user starts typing is a common cause of errors, because people forget what the field was for. Place a clear, persistent label above each field. When a format might confuse, a phone number, a tax code, or where to find a CVV, add a short line of helper text rather than leaving users to guess and fail.

4. Match the input to the data

The right input type quietly removes work for the user. Use radio buttons instead of a dropdown when there are only two or three choices, trigger the numeric keypad for phone numbers on mobile, and size each field to its content. Avoid splitting one value across several boxes, a single phone-number field always beats separate country-code and number fields.

5. Mark optional fields, not required ones

If most of your fields are required, flag only the optional ones instead of stamping “required” everywhere. Better still, remove optional fields altogether or tuck them behind a collapsible “add more details” section. Baymard found sites can cut 20–60% of their visible fields this way without losing any data that actually matters.

6. Validate kindly, not strictly

Validation should catch real mistakes without punishing valid input. Overly strict rules—rejecting an email with a plus sign, or a correctly formatted phone number, quietly kill submissions. Validate inline as users finish each field, show specific and friendly error messages, and always preserve what they already typed instead of clearing the whole form.

7. Write action-focused button labels

A generic “Submit” tells the user nothing. Label the button with the outcome instead: “Get my free quote”, “Book a consultation” or “Place order”. Make the primary button visually dominant, and avoid reset or clear buttons entirely, the risk of an accidental wipe far outweighs the rare need to start over.

8. Design mobile-first

Most Vietnamese users will meet your form on a phone, so design for that screen first. Use large tap targets, generous spacing, the correct on-screen keyboard for each field, and enable browser autofill so returning visitors finish in seconds. A form that feels effortless on mobile will feel effortless everywhere else too.

A pre-launch form checklist

Before you publish a new or redesigned form, run through this quick list to catch the most common conversion leaks:

Every field earns its place, nothing “nice to have” is left in.

One column, in a logical top-to-bottom order.

Visible labels above fields, with helper text wherever the format is tricky.

Correct input types and the right mobile keyboards.

Only optional fields are marked; required is the default.

Inline, friendly validation that never erases input.

A specific, benefit-led label on the primary button.

Frequently asked questions

How many fields should a lead form have?
As few as possible, typically three to five for a contact or lead form. Ask only for what you need to make first contact: a name, a phone number or email, and perhaps the service the visitor is interested in. You can gather everything else during the conversation that follows, when the person is already engaged and far more willing to share.

Should I use a multi-step form?
Multi-step forms help for longer flows like bookings or checkout, because breaking a big form into small, focused steps feels less intimidating and lets you show progress. For a simple contact form, though, a single short step is usually faster. Test both against your own audience before you commit to either approach.

Turn your form into a conversion engine

For an SME, the contact or checkout form is where marketing spend becomes real business, so it deserves the same care as your ads and landing pages.
