Ranking #1 on Google Isn’t Enough Anymore, Here’s How to Get Found in AI Search
If your business ranks well on Google but never shows up when a customer asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode “where’s a good place near me,” you’re not alone, and it’s quietly costing you leads. A new 2026 report shows AI assistants recommend only a tiny fraction of the businesses that Google’s local pack surfaces. For Vietnamese SMEs in F&B, retail, real estate and services, the takeaway is simple: being visible in AI search is now a separate game you have to play on purpose.
The 30x visibility gap AI just created
SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index analysed nearly 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands to see how often businesses appear in AI answers versus traditional Google results. The gap is dramatic, appearing in an AI recommendation is between 3x and 30x harder than landing in Google’s local 3-pack.
- Google local 3-pack: about 35.9% of businesses appear, the baseline everyone knows.
- Google Gemini: only an 11% recommendation rate (roughly 3x harder).
- Perplexity: a 7.4% recommendation rate (average 4.1-star businesses).
- ChatGPT: just a 1.2% recommendation rate, around 30x harder than the local pack.
There’s a data-quality problem too. The report found business information was only about 68% accurate on ChatGPT and Perplexity, versus 100% on Gemini. In other words, AI tools are not only pickier, they sometimes get your name, hours or address wrong, which silently sends customers to a competitor.

Why this is a wake-up call for Vietnamese SMEs
More and more customers in Vietnam now open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to shortlist a restaurant, clinic, gym or real estate agent before they ever touch Google Maps. If AI only recommends 1–11% of businesses, the ones it does mention capture the attention that used to be spread across a whole page of Google results. The winner takes most.
The good news: the same signals that push you into AI answers are things a well-run SME can control, accurate listings, real reviews and a clean website. You don’t need a global marketing budget; you need consistency and the right technical setup, which is exactly where a focused local strategy pays off.
5 moves to get your business recommended by AI
Keep your rating above 4.0 and reviews recent
AI models lean on ratings and review recency to decide who’s worth recommending. SOCi’s data shows recommended businesses average 3.9–4.3 stars, so treat 4.0+ as your floor. Ask happy customers for a review within the same week, and aim for fresh reviews every 30–90 days so AI reads your business as active, not abandoned.
Make your business data identical everywhere
Inconsistent name, address, phone or hours across Google Business Profile, Facebook, Zalo, industry directories and your own site confuse AI models, and that 68% accuracy figure shows how often they get it wrong. Pick one canonical version of your details and match it letter-for-letter across every platform.

Add Schema structured data to your website
Structured data (Schema.org markup for LocalBusiness, reviews, opening hours and FAQs) is how you spell out your facts in a language AI can read directly from your site. Most template websites in Vietnam ship without it; adding it is a one-time technical job that makes your business far easier for AI to quote correctly.
Publish content that answers real customer questions
AI assistants pull from pages that clearly answer questions like “best physiotherapy clinic in District 3” or “pet-friendly cafe near me.” Write helpful, specific pages and FAQs around the exact phrasing your customers use, in both Vietnamese and English if you serve expats, and you give AI something concrete to cite.
Keep doing local SEO, AI reads Google too
Don’t drop Google to chase AI. Gemini and AI Overviews are built on Google’s index, and even ChatGPT increasingly leans on web and map data. A strong Google Business Profile and solid local SEO remain the foundation; AI visibility is the layer you add on top, not a replacement.
FAQ
You can’t “list” your business inside ChatGPT directly, it surfaces businesses it trusts based on public data like reviews, directories and websites. So the work isn’t buying a spot; it’s making your online footprint accurate and reputable enough that AI chooses you on its own.
Listing fixes and Schema markup can be done in days; ratings and review recency build over weeks. Most SMEs see meaningful movement within one to three months of consistent effort, especially in less competitive local categories.
