Zero-Click Search in 2026: What It Means for Your SME (and How to Win Anyway)

If your business depends on Google to bring in customers, 2026 delivered a wake-up call. A new SparkToro study found that 68% of US Google searches now end without a single click to any website. People are getting their answers on the results page itself and never visiting a business. For SMEs in real estate, retail, F&B, wellness or education, that shift changes how you should spend your SEO and marketing budget. Here is what the data really says, and five practical moves to keep winning leads.

What the 2026 zero-click data actually says

SparkToro, analyzing Similarweb clickstream data for US Google searches from January to April 2026, found that 68.01% of searches ended without a click, up 7.56 percentage points from 60.45% in 2024. The share of searches sending at least one click to an external site fell by roughly 22.9% over that period. The long-term trend is clear: zero-click was around 50% in 2019 and has climbed steadily since.

Two AI features are driving the change. AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches and cut click-through rates by nearly 60% when shown. Google’s newer AI Mode is still small at 0.34% of searches, but it passed 1 billion monthly users at Google I/O 2026 and query volume is roughly doubling each quarter. As SparkToro’s Rand Fishkin put it, “SEO alone may be insufficient for many publishers.”

The takeaway isn’t that Google traffic is gone, it’s that the same ranking now returns fewer visitors than it did two years ago. If your growth plan assumes “rank higher, get more clicks,” the math has quietly shifted underneath it. Planning around visibility and demand, rather than clicks alone, is what separates the businesses that keep growing from the ones that watch their traffic quietly erode.

Why this matters more for Vietnamese SMEs

For most Vietnamese SMEs, organic Google traffic has been the cheapest and most scalable source of leads, a spa filling appointment slots, a real-estate office capturing buyers, an F&B brand pulling in local diners. When two-thirds of searches never leave Google, that “rented” traffic becomes riskier and more expensive to rely on. The businesses that thrive from here won’t be the ones chasing rankings alone; they’ll be the ones building visibility, brand and owned audiences that survive the next algorithm change. The good news: this is a strategy problem, not a dead end, and it rewards the businesses that adapt first.

5 moves to stay visible and keep winning leads

Optimize to be the answer, not just to rank (AEO/GEO)

When Google answers a query directly, being cited inside that answer beats being link number four. Structure content around the real questions your customers ask, add clear FAQ sections, use schema markup, and give concise, factual answers that AI can lift. This “Answer Engine Optimization” keeps your brand present even when the search ends in zero clicks.

Build a brand people search by name

Branded and navigational searches still click through at high rates. Invest in being memorable, a consistent identity, an active social presence, PR and genuine reviews, so customers search your shop or brand name directly instead of a generic term. Brand demand is the one signal AI cannot summarize away.

Double down on local and transactional intent

Not every search is zero-click. Queries like “book,” “near me,” “price” and “buy” still send clicks and phone calls. Optimize your Google Business Profile, collect reviews, and target bottom-of-funnel keywords where a real visit, call or purchase is the goal, these are the searches most resistant to AI summarization.

Convert the visitors you do get

With fewer clicks arriving, each one is worth more. A fast, mobile-first website with clear calls to action, trust signals and a frictionless contact or booking flow turns scarce traffic into real leads. In 2026, conversion rate optimization (CRO) matters as much as traffic growth.

Own your audience

Reduce your dependence on borrowed reach. Build email and Zalo lists, run remarketing to visitors you’ve already earned, and nurture repeat customers you can reach without paying Google or Meta every time. Owned channels are your hedge against every future search shift.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No, but SEO on its own is no longer enough. It still drives branded, local and transactional clicks; it now works best combined with brand-building and Answer Engine Optimization.

Should my SME still publish blog content?

Yes. Helpful, authoritative content is exactly what AI answers cite, and what earns the branded searches that still convert into customers.
