AI Search Is Booming — But Only 28% Trust It. Here Is the SEO Opportunity for SMEs

Artificial intelligence is changing how people search, but it has not taken over the way the headlines suggest. A recent 19-market YouGov survey highlighted by Search Engine Journal found that only 28% of online searchers trust information from AI assistants, while 70% still trust traditional search engines and 76% trust maps. For small and medium businesses, that gap is not a threat — it is one of the clearest SEO opportunities of 2026.

What the data actually says

The numbers paint a very different picture from the “AI is killing search” narrative. Traditional search engines are still where journeys begin: 86% of people used one in the past 30 days, 69% start with a search engine when they have a specific question (versus 16% who start with AI), and for product research the split is even wider — 62% search engine to just 4% AI. Even among people who do use AI search, only 17% stop after the AI answer; 22% click through to the cited links anyway, and among heavy daily AI users that click-through rate rises to 33%. In other words, AI is increasingly a verification layer, not the final destination.

The generational data reinforces this. Millennials lead AI assistant use at just 33% adoption, followed by Gen X at 22% and Baby Boomers and older at 20%. Growth is coming from existing users going deeper — 53% of frequent AI searchers expect to use it more next year — while only 4% of non-users expect to start. For a local business, that means the audience you serve today is still overwhelmingly reachable through the search habits you already know.

Why the “zero-click apocalypse” is overstated

The fear that AI Overviews and chatbots will vaporize your website traffic assumes people accept AI answers at face value. The data says they do not. As SEJ contributor Greg Jarboe put it, search engines “are winning the trust war by more than 40 points.” People treat AI like a helpful summary they still want to double-check — and when they check, they click. That behaviour is the whole game for SMEs: if your website is the page they land on to verify a claim, you win the visit, the trust, and often the customer. The businesses that panic and stop investing in content are the ones who will actually lose traffic.

What this means for Vietnamese SMEs

For SMEs in Vietnam — whether you run a real-estate agency, a retail shop, an F&B brand, a clinic, or an education centre — the takeaway is both reassuring and practical. AI adoption in your market is still early, and local buyers continue to research carefully before spending, especially on higher-value services. That means a well-structured, trustworthy website still does the heavy lifting. The mistake would be to chase every AI trend while neglecting the fundamentals that quietly bring in leads month after month.

3 moves to turn AI search into traffic

1. Double down on classic SEO fundamentals

On-page optimization, clean site structure, fast load times, mobile UX, and schema markup are not “legacy” tactics — they are what makes your content eligible to be cited by AI in the first place, and findable by the 86% who still use Google. If your website is slow or poorly structured, no AI strategy will save it.

2. Build content for the post-click moment

When an AI user clicks through to verify, they should land on something more detailed, more current, and more clearly sourced than the summary they just read. Add specifics, dates, local data, and real examples. A thin page that just repeats the AI answer gives them no reason to stay.

3. Become the “official source”

Trust signals matter. Visible author bylines, “last updated” dates, transparent methodology, real contact details, and structured data all tell both users and AI systems that you are a primary source worth citing. For an SME, becoming the recognised local authority in your niche is entirely achievable — and it compounds over time.

FAQ

Should SMEs stop doing SEO and focus only on AI?

No. The data shows classic SEO still drives the majority of discovery, and strong fundamentals are what make you visible in AI results too. Treat AI optimization as an extension of SEO, not a replacement.

Will AI Overviews reduce my website traffic?

They can reduce clicks for purely informational queries, but users still click through to verify and to take action. Well-structured pages that offer more than the summary continue to earn visits.
